Mother of Victor Dixon student killed in traffic crash demands safety systems

The mother of the 14-year-old Victor Dixon High School student who was killed in a traffic crash earlier this month is appealing to the Prime Minister to install safety systems near the school.

Amelia Willis died in hospital on March 10, hours after she was hit by a car at the intersection of Manchester and May Day roads about 200 metres from her school.

This week, her mother Requel Willis led a march from the school her daughter attended to the accident scene to bring awareness to the absence of safety systems.

She was supported by other parents, students and staff of the Victor Dixon High School.

Willis wants the government to erect stop lights at the intersection near the school and also wants the creation of a lay-by for drop offs.

She is also advocating for the installation of speed meters.

On March 10 little Amelia got out of a taxi at the intersection of May Day and Manchester roads and was just about to cross the roadway when she was hit by another taxi travelling from the opposite direction.

The impact hoisted her into the air.

She landed on a Honda CR-V heading towards Mandeville and later succumbed to her injuries at hospital.
