Family of pregnant woman killed in St Thomas files negligence suit against gov't

The family of the pregnant woman who was shot and killed by a policeman in St Thomas in 2012 has filed a negligence suit against the government.
Yesterday, Police Corporal Dwayne Smart was found not guilty of murder.
A seven-member jury also found Smart not guilty of wounding with intent in connection with the shooting of the dead woman's sister as she came to the defence of her sibling.
However, attorney for the woman’s family, Dorothy Lightbourne, says a suit has already been filed.
She says a date is to be set for the matter to be heard.
However, Lightbourne says she expects the matter to be settled quickly.

During the near five-week trial in the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston, prosecutors led evidence that Kayann Lamont, who was eight months pregnant at the time, was shot in the head by Smart as she resisted his attempts to arrest her for using indecent language.
However, Smart, through his attorney Valerie Neita Robertson, argued that the shooting was accidental.
He said during his attempt to arrest Lamont, a scuffle ensued and they both fell to the ground.
Smart said he tripped and his firearm accidentally went off as he attempted to get back on his feet.
