73 nabbed as passport office implements facial recognition technology

Some 73 persons have been arrested for identity fraud since the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) began using facial recognition software last year.

This was disclosed yesterday by National Security Minister Robert Montague who also said 473 persons have been identified with multiple passports.

He said the use of facial recognition technology is part of measures being implemented by the government to enhance the country's border-management controls.

Facial recognition technology uses biometric data to identify persons.

The software is installed at the 15 immigration kiosks located at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, and the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay.

It is now also used in the passport production process.
