JPS rolls out smart LED Streetlight programme in western Jamaica

The Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS) will this morning begin the roll out of its Smart LED Streetlight programme in western Jamaica. 

According to T’Shura Gibbs, the power company’s regional director for western Jamaica, the roll out is beginning in Bogue Village and the Montego Freeport areas.,

She says the JPS is aiming to install about 300 smart LED street lights by June 19.

"We are very excited that we are starting our smart LED street light programme on time, we did commit to a June 1, 2017 start date and we are proud to know that we can fulfil this commitment," said Gibbs, who is also president of the Montego Bay chamber of Commerce and Industry.  

"This is something that JPS and the ministry of Energy has been working on for some time now and I am very happy that we were able to bring it to fruition at a time like this."

The Smart Streetlight Project will target a total of 110,000 streetlights across Jamaica over the next three years, with 35,000 to be installed by December 2017.

Some 5000 6000 streetlights will be installed during the first year.

The power company expects that the installation of smart streetlights will result in lower energy costs and improved energy efficiency.

In addition, smart streetlights can facilitate the smart technology to support crime fighting, through the use of image sensing, including use of closed-circuit TV.

Other benefits of the smart streetlight system include its ability to detect and report light failure per location; report maintenance and repairs of lights; as well as measure and report energy usage by each lamp.
