IGL raises bar in safety and health standards

The Minister of Labour and Social Security, Shahine Robinson, has lauded IGL Limited for raising the bar on health, safety and environment (HSE) issues, as the company rewarded employees for good safety practices and revealed the results of the collective safety standards, which resulted in the lowest record of incidents in the last six years.

Robinson, who was speaking at the fifth annual IGL HSE Road Safety Award Ceremony yesterday, said, "We applaud the action of IGL in raising the bar in safety and health to implement best practices. This awards programme demonstrates that IGL is willing to take the necessary steps to achieve a culture of safety."

She noted that the programme signals to workers that the organisation is serious about occupational safety and health. "The action and activities of IGL also underscores leadership in production, for the manufacturing, processing, storage and distribution of liquefied petroleum gas are very hazardous activities. Any step in this chain of activities, where caution is ignored and there is non-compliance with standards, can lead to catastrophic events that are capable of inflicting serious harm to workers, the community and the environment."

Wayne Kirkpatrick, general manager of IGL Limited, said that the company continues to serve its customers islandwide, covering 4.7 million kilometres annually, consistently delivering excellent customer service over 55 years. For 2016, the team had a track record of zero loss time, no medical cases, and one first aid case. The enviable reputation is a reflection of the company's safety principles, which are driven by its HSE commitment. "The HSE policy is a systematic approach to safety management, which is designed for ensuring compliance with local and international standards of practice, and for achieving continuous performance and improvement," shared Kirkpatrick.

Speaking at the event, Dwight Campbell, HSE manager and the founder of the awards, expressed gratitude to the staff members for adhering to the safety standards, and for their consistent efforts in putting safety first.

Campbell said he established the awards programme in late 2011-2012 to reinforce IGL's commitment to continuous improvement to road safety, vehicle safety, plant safety, good housekeeping and general safety.
