The Ministry of Justice is to meet on Wednesday with Justices of the Peace (JP) from St James and Trelawny about their roles and responsibilities in a zone of special operations.

The meeting is to be held at the Royalton White Sands Resort in Montego Bay beginning at 1 o'clock in the afternoon.

The Justice Ministry had previously held a small-scale meeting in St James with members of the Lay Magistrates’ board of management for the parish to discuss the Zones of Special Operations Bill which was passed in July.

The legislation allows the Prime Minister, on the advice of the National Security Council, to declare a zone of special operation in an area with rampant criminality, gang warfare, and escalating violence and murder.

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck has said JPs who take part in a special zone would be required to ensure that searches and seizures are carried out in a humane manner, and that there are no human rights abuses.
