Political newcomer, Dr Shane Alexis, has promised his Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) rival a political trouncing when the by-election for the St Mary South East constituency is called.

Dr Alexis, who was named the PNP standard bearer, following the death of Dr Winston Green last month, this afternoon declared himself the right "Doctor" for the constituency.

Dr Alexis is expected to be challenged by Dr Norman Dunn of the governing JLP, who lost the vote for the constituency marginally to Dr Green in last year's general elections.

And Dr Alexis joined his PNP colleagues in questioning the government's timing to implement a road rehabilitation project for the Junction main road which connects Kingston and St Andrew to the parishes of St Mary and Portland.

He is suggesting that the project was brought forward to influence votes.
