School Report | Sixth-form success at Ascot

The administrators at the St Catherine-based Ascot High School are gloating about the performance of its their sixth form, which was established in 2011.
Academic performance has been consistently high as indicated by the pass rate in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE): Year 1 (78 per cent), Year 2 (85 per cent); and Year 3 (75 per cent). Worthy of note, the school placed second and fourth in the CAPE Performing Arts examination top 10 results for the Caribbean.
But the school's principal, Cedric Murray, told The Sunday Gleaner that the sixth form now needs additional facilities as it develops.
Ascot High, which was established in 1997, does not yet have a past student network to support co-curricular activities. Nonetheless, the school appeared at the quarter-finals twice in the past three years in the Burger King-sponsored National Secondary Schools' Debating Competition. The institution also does exceptionally well in the performing arts and has won several trophies from the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission.
The school also has done well in the past in sports, but the playing field needs to be developed - to be grassed and fenced. This negatively affects students' physical education class and preparation for the CSEC examination.
