Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie says the ministry, through municipal corporations, owes close to $800 million to the National Water Commission (NWC) for water supplied through community standpipes.

McKenzie says the ministry plans to conduct an audit of community standpipes islandwide as part of measures to reduce the cost to deliver domestic water to residents.

He said the exercise, which will be carried out in tandem with the NWC, aims to identify standpipes that are either non-functional or which are being inappropriately used.

McKenzie says mayors and councillors will be asked to furnish a list of all standpipes across their parishes.
