Northern Caribbean University (NCU) has pledged to cover the cost of tertiary education for the daughter of slain police corporal Melvin Smith through a scholarship fund.

The announcement was made by president of NCU, Dr Lincoln Edwards, during memorial service held for Smith in the Cecil Charlton Park, in Manchester on Thursday.

Smith was shot several times as he attempted to apprehend a robber who had stolen a motorcycle in the Mandeville town centre two Fridays ago.

He died at hospital while undergoing treatment.

Edwards says the university decided to establish the scholarship fund to remove that burden from the slain policeman’s family and ensure that his daughter will have the education he wanted for her.

Member of Parliament for North East Manchester, Audley Shaw, who also spoke at the memorial service, said the entire island needs to be declared a zone of special operation.

Shaw urged citizens to come forward and start giving the police information about criminals and illegal guns to help take back the country.
