Lucky Hill Basic School Gets Assistance

The Lucky Hill Basic School in St Catherine recently received much-needed help after a public appeal by principal Sandra Walters got the attention of a local non-governmental organisation (NGO).

Directors of the NGO, Personal Community Builder Empowerment (PCBE), heard the principal's appeal for a stove, refrigerator and a water tank, and provided all three items to the school.

Project Manager of PCBE Robert Distant, told Rural Xpress at the presentation ceremony that after seeing the passionate appeal by the principal, the organisation's board of directors were moved with compassion and offered to assist the school.

"We immediately contacted our sponsors National Housing Trust (NHT), and Roto Tech International, who gave us the money to purchase all three items. The councillor for the area, Roogae Kirlew, provided the logistics for the project," Distant disclosed.

"Our needs assessment showed that the school was unable to provide warm meals for the students because of not having a stove to cook and a refrigerator for storage purposes.

"There was also a need for a water storage tank because of the inconsistency of the water supply to the school; so we also acquired a 800-gallon tank," Distant related. "Such an offer will quench the needs of the school and we are gratified to be able to assist," he added.

The project manager disclosed that the PCBE is currently targeting the Ebenezer Basic School in the area where there is a dire need for a modern toilet system and a stove. Students are presently utilising a pothole toilet.

"Our concentration on improving the facilities in basic schools is based on our belief that the foundational approach to education can more effectively position students to grow and become better contributors to our society."

Principal of the school, Sandra Walters, told Rural Xpress that the items are of tremendous importance to the smooth functioning of the school. "We cannot be more grateful; these items were badly needed and I am extremely thankful to the Personal Community Builder Empowerment organisation and its directors," declared Walters.

The Lucky Hill Basic School was rebuilt on Labour Day, May 23, 2017, by the St Catherine Municipal Cooperation after being in a state of disrepair for a considerable period.
