Bad Riverton roads may affect garbage collection
The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) says that due to heavy rains over recent months, makeshift repair work is ongoing to correct severe damage to the Riverton disposal site's interior roads and may affect garbage collection during the Christmas season.
As a result of the work being carried out, operations at the disposal site have been negatively affected, resulting in periodic delays, which will continue to affect the garbage-collection schedules for Kingston and St Andrew and St Catherine.
In a statement issued last week, the NSWMA said that with the approaching Christmas season and the expected increase in the generation of solid waste, it is doing everything possible to complete the work and to have operations return to normalcy.
Chairman of the NSWMA Dennis Chung told The Gleaner that "it had to do with the rains. When the rain falls, because of the type of terrain that is on the site, it is very muddy and the trucks can't traverse it".
