Alleged Portland murderer found hanging from tree, suspected suicide

A Portland man, who was on the run for two days after he allegedly stabbed and killed a male resident in Portland, is suspected to have committed suicide.

He is Garfield McDonald a taxi driver and former employee at the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA).

McDonald was found by a relative hanging by the neck from a rope on a mango tree shortly after 10 o’clock yesterday morning in the community of Lewis, St Ann.

A police report suggests McDonald stabbed a man, known only as ‘Kadi', at Prospect in Portland shortly after 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon.

He reportedly fled the area in his motor car to the community of his birth in St Ann.

The police say a relative made arrangements for McDonald to surrender to them in the presence of a minister of religion, however, when he did not turn up, they went in search of him.

His body was later found hanging from the tree at the back of a house owned by a family member.
