Trucks and other large vehicles warned to avoid Richmond to Highgate roadway due to breakaway

Operators of large motor vehicles including laden trucks are being advised by the National Works Agency (NWA) not to use the Richmond to Highgate roadway in St Mary as it is unsafe to do so.

The NWA's Communications Manager, Stephen Shaw, says a wet embankment and falling material is hampering efforts to clear a massive landslide in the eastbound lane at a section of the roadway in the vicinity of the Old Chocolate Factory.

Shaw says a retaining wall in the westbound lane has also collapsed creating a breakaway directly opposite the landslide.

He says this has narrowed the road making it dangerous for larger vehicles to traverse the area as the breakaway could deteriorate under the weight of the vehicle.

Shaw notes that the road surface is also muddy and motorists will find it difficult to safely apply their brakes.

He says as the NWA continues its efforts to clear the roadway, it is advising truck drivers to use the alternate routes through Aleppo or Marlborough.
