Justice minister calls for more JPs

Minister of Justice Delroy Chuck is urging more Jamaicans to make themselves available to join the ranks of the nations justices of the peace (JPs).

Chuck, who was addressing Portland JPs at their annual general meeting at the Buff Bay courthouse last Friday, said that the nation needs about 500 persons available for active duty in all 14 parishes.

"I am well aware that justices of the peace are overburdened," said Chuck.

"We are hoping that the serving JPs can assist with selecting persons of integrity to undergo training, rather than to leave the burden on the parish judge, the superintendent of police, and the Custos. I want for them to make the necessary recommendation and assessment of persons, who are honest, sincere, and willing to serve."

He noted that JPs provide a very important service to community residents and business operators, especially in the signing of legal documents and for verification.
