Independence City to get new street signs

In a move to fulfil his vision to make Independence City a model community in Portmore, Councillor Courtney Edwards has embarked on a project to achieve this objective.
Edwards, who is working in collaboration with Signtex has started a process to erect new street signs and to replace existing ones that are obscured throughout the division.
"For 23 years, nothing has been done to revitalise these street signs of which some have gone missing and others have become obscured over time," Edwards noted.
"More than 90 per cent of the streets signs in Independence City need to be replaced. We will achieve this in two phases beginning with the main roads and then the secondary ones."
"The idea is to complete the road sign project and then tackle the task of numbering all the houses for easy identification," Edwards told The Gleaner.
"Other than the security risk it poses for persons from outside who are not familiar with the area, and can be upended by nefarious persons when they seek directions, emergency vehicles oftentimes have difficulty in locating streets and addresses because there are no proper street signs and gate numbers," he added.
Turning to other initiatives that he said were important to his vision, the councillor who lives in the community said, in achieving the 14 programmes and projects he has identified that can transform the community, the citizens have to buy into his vision. So his first priority is to re-energise the citizens' associations.
