Students of Jamaica Christian School for the Deaf Taniel Blake (left), champion girl at the primary school level, and (right) Delano Williams, champion boy at the primary school level, take a moment to share the lens with Jamilia Crooks, programmes administrator, NCB Foundation (NCBF), at the eighth annual Deaf Sports Jamaica (DSJ) National Deaf Sports Day held recently. Danny Williams School for the Deaf and Lister Mair/Gilby School for the Deaf took home first place for the primary and high school categories, respectively. Established in 2010, DSJ is a non-profit organisation dedicated to using sport as a medium to encourage and improve social integration of deaf and hard of hearing persons. DSJ’s mission is to facilitate ‘Culture, Empowerment and Awareness to the Deaf Community through Sports.’ This mission closely reflects that of the NCBF, whose own mandate is to support nation-building through youth development and sport. NCBF sponsored this event for the second time, donating $100,000.
