Honouring 'Herbie' - Deaf community unveils plaque in memory of unsung hero

The Jamaica Association for the Deaf (JAD), as part of its 80th anniversary celebration, has unveiled a memorial plaque in honour of Herbert 'Herbie' Hall, who dedicated his life to the organisation from 1963 until his passing in 2017.

The unveiling ceremony was held at the JAD head office in Hope Estate, Papine, and was attended by Hall's widow, his children and grandchildren, as well as board members, including chairman Christopher Williams and patron Valerie Facey.

During the unveiling ceremony, Williams declared that Herbie was an astute businessman, a mentor and a leader from whom he learnt a great deal.

In her presentation, Facey remembered Herbie as an unsung hero who enjoyed working behind the scenes. She described him as a private individual who was meticulous in his time-management skills.

Following the unveiling, the guests went inside the newly named Herbert Hall Memorial Boardroom for the signing of the memorandum of understanding for the Herbert Hall Memorial Scholarship Fund, for deaf children.

The JAD, established in 1938, is a non-profit organisation with a mandate to improve the quality of life for deaf and hard-of-hearing persons in Jamaica.
