More delay in Mario Deane murder case

Outstanding psychiatric reports have again delayed the fit to plea hearing for Marvin Orr and Adrian Morgan, the inmates charged with murder in relation to the 2014 death of St James construction worker Mario Deane.

The long-awaited reports were expected to be submitted to the court yesterday but this did not happen.

Previously prepared psychiatric reports declared that Orr and Morgan, who are both mentally challenged, were fit to plea.

However, under the Criminal Justice (Administration) Act, two sets of psychiatric reports are needed before proceeding with a defendant's fitness-to-plea hearing.

The men were further remanded and the hearing put off until next Wednesday, July 18.

Orr and Morgan were arrested and charged after Deane died following an allegedly beaten by other inmates on August 3, 2014, while in custody at the Barnett Street police lock-up in Montego Bay.

Deane died at hospital three days later.

A third defendant, Damion Cargill, was charged along with Orr and Morgan but was later deemed mentally unfit to stand trial and was released into the custody of his family.
