Data protection, NIDS big talking points for UWI’s cyber security confab

The National Identification System (NIDS) and data protection will be among the big talking points for the Sixth National Cybersecurity Conference at the University of the West Indies Regional Headquarters in November.

The free, two-day event will be held on November 27 and 28 under the theme 'Data Protection: Securing Big Data, Biometrics and National ID Systems'.

The conference, sponsored by the National Commercial Bank, is being organised by the Mona Information and Communication Technology Policy Centre, based at the Caribbean School of Media and Communication.

It is arranged annually in association with the International Telecommunication Union, the global Internet Society, the Canadian High Commission in Jamaica, and the local law firm Gibson Henlin Gibson.

This year's conference will be held in the context of ongoing debates about the importance of protection of citizens, government, and corporate data on computers.

A range of local and international speakers will examine the challenges of keeping digital data safe and will present new opportunities to protect large online databases.

The conference will also examine local and global trends in establishing and securing national ID systems, including the roles of government, citizens, and corporations.

The opening of online registration for participants in the Sixth National Cybersecurity Conference will be announced shortly.
