A student who was onboard a minibus that ran off the road in Portland yesterday says the driver was racing with another bus.

The 13-year-old student told reporters that the bus was travelling at a “high speed” and that the driver lost control as it approached a narrow section of the roadway.

According to reports, eight students were taken to hospital after the minibus ran off the road in the community of Bar Hill and slid down a precipice.

The vehicle reportedly came to a halt near a beach.

Witnesses report that there were screaming and shouting as terrified students desperately tried to escape the wreckage.

It’s reported that dozens of residents quickly rushed to their assistance.

Reports to The Gleaner are that at least three students suffered broken bones.
