Bull Bay, St Thomas residents again protest fatal police shooting

Irate residents of Eleven Miles, Bull Bay in St Thomas have again mounted roadblocks and set fire to the road to protest the fatal shooting of a security guard last Friday.

Twenty-three-year-old Rexon Baker otherwise called Sunny or Spoonhead was allegedly killed by the police.

The residents claim that he was killed in cold blood.

"We nah defend no killer, we nah defend no criminal! Spoonhead was a hard-working man. Him neva thief, he was the breadwinner of his family and dem tek him out a him bed from beside him woman and go kill him for no reason," said family member Shauntae Marshall, who along with other placard-bearing protesters chanted “police brutality.”

The residents told The Gleaner that they have become fearful since the shooting.

"Everybody a run, pickney a run, woman a run. We fraid bad. The police dem mek we so scared. Police all a squeechi inna mi yawd some hours a night and morning. You can see them hiding in the bushes, for what I don't know," said a resident who identified himself as Miller.

The roadblocks left scores of commuters, including students, stranded.

The traffic build-up extended for more than a mile in both directions. 

Firefighters subsequently managed to extinguish the fire and cleared the debris.
