We are living in a perilous time – JBU president
The Reverend Karen Kirlew, the first female president of the Jamaica Baptist Union (JBU), says the nation is currently facing perilous times as the Church is now dealing with a crooked and perverse generation in which laws are being circumvented even by those who should uphold them.
Kirlew, who was delivering the closing sermon of the JBU’s 169th General Assembly at the Montego Convention Centre in St James on Sunday, said God is calling the nation into a partnership with Him.
“Sisters and brothers, God created us for the community, He created us for partnership. As Baptist, you know who God is. Appreciate that we are dependent on Him and remain His children.
“God is calling for us to be on the mission field. It is a special calling; we must hear His call and respond with a spirit of love,” Kirlew told persons in attendance at the assembly. “The world needs to be rescued from its plight. We are living in a broken-down society where there are thieves and liars, Judases and betrayers. This is where God Almighty is calling us, [to] go there where there are downcast and affected [people].”
Kirlew encouraged the more than 4,000 congregants to examine themselves.
“What kind of partner are you?” asked Kirlew. “How are we going to treat one another in this community of faith? There is a need for communion with one another. Sisters and brothers, we must speak faithfully to God Almighty.”
