Walsh Jr bags five but Windies hammered by Aussies in 1st ODI
West Indies leg-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr bagged career-best One Day figures, but that could not prevent the home side from going down by 133 runs to Australia under the Duckworth Lewis method in the opening rain-affected match in Barbados.
Walsh Jr starred with the ball by bagging five wickets for 39 runs in restricting the Aussies to 253 for nine in 49 overs, however, Player of the Match Mitchell Starc snared five wickets of his own, as the West Indies, chasing a revised target of 257 to win, were blown away for a mere 123 in 26.2 overs.
The pacer was in scintillating form as he put the West Indies on the back foot from the first ball when he removed Evin Lewis for a duck.
Starc then uprooted the off-stump of Jason Mohammed for two, to leave the home side in tatters at four for two in the third over.
The side would never recover from that horrendous start, as only captain Kieron Pollard with a fighting 56 from 57 balls and a late order 20 from Walsh Jr, saved face for the regional side.
Starc ended with five for 48 while Josh Hazelwood bagged three for 11 from six overs.
Earlier, Walsh Jr continued his good form with the ball, as he ripped through the Australian middle and lower order to claim his career-best figures.
The leg-spinner removed innings top scorer and stand-in captain Alex Carey for 67, then sent back Ashton Turner for 49, before cleaning up the tail.
Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein picked up two for 50 while Alzarri Joseph bagged two for 40.
