A man who was held with ganja valued at US$2 million or approximately J$300 million has been fined a total of J$1.5 million after pleading guilty to drug charges.

Dwayne Dewar was fined $1 million for dealing in marijuana and $500,000 for possession of marijuana in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Wednesday.

He pleaded guilty to the charges in February.

Both fines are the maximum allowed under the Dangerous Drugs Act, which was amended in 2015 to increase the maximum penalty from $15,000, among other things.

Odane Marston, the attorney who represented Dewar, declined to comment on the sentence when contacted.

Dewar was arrested on December 17, 2022 during a police-military operation along the Bull Bay main road in St Andrew.

According to a police report, the compressed ganja was found hidden in a motor truck in which he was travelling.
