Dwight Fletcher | The truth about sex

We live in a sex-saturated society. Sex is in the media daily, with entire television shows, series, and movies based on it. It’s on the radio, in the newspapers, and the Internet is inundated with it. We use the psychology of sex to sell almost everything. Sociologically, sex is a driving force.

What we may not understand though is that being constantly bombarded with these images and expressions of sex is affecting the way we view it. They are teaching us what to believe about sex, because what we constantly see and hear affects what we believe. We are persistently being conditioned by society’s approach to sex, which creates a lot of pressure. It pushes young persons to engage in various types of sexual experimentation; it drives singles toward pre-marital sex and stimulates adults to promiscuity and pornography. Sex is discussed in our schools, doctor’s offices, public arenas, and private gatherings. It’s talked about everywhere, but rarely in church.

Instead, society decides what is right and wrong, and people’s lives are being destroyed through it. There’s a lot of talk about sex, but very little truth about it. Sex is possibly one of the most misunderstood concepts in our society. We need to discover the truth about what God says regarding it because He made it. John 8:32 (NIV) says, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” When we live our lives according to truth, it’s freeing and empowering. Jesus said, it’s the abundant way to live. The opposite is also true. If we build our lives on a lie (untruth), we are really living in bondage. It’s like living in prison, with uncertainty. Truth brings life and untruth brings the opposite of life. The truth really does set us free.

IT’S A GIFT

Fortunately, the Bible is very open and frank about sex. There’s not a prudish note in the entire Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation. The book of the Bible called the Songs of Solomon celebrates the sensuality of erotic love. The Bible is not bashful about sex, as it reflects the attitude that one would expect from the One who created it, God. He knows and understands what sex means and how it works better than anyone. He knows exactly what it is good for and tells us how to use it. Somehow, we have got it mixed up and think sex was the devil’s idea, so we shouldn’t speak about it because it’s dirty. Or we speak like it’s man who discovered sex.

Sex is God’s idea; He created it. From the first chapter of the Bible, we see this truth. “ In the image of God He created them; male and female He created them. 28. Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply.” Genesis 1:27-28 (NLT). For humans to multiply it requires sex, within the marriage relationship. It’s a gift that comes from God, and when used according to His plan, it’s not dirty nor is it something that should bring about guilt or shame in our lives. It is God who created sex to be fun. He could have made it some other way by making procreation non-sexual. God created the way it should happen and gave us a sex drive. From the beginning when everything was pure, God created us as sexual beings.
