Opposition Junior Spokesperson on Citizen Security Jouvaughnie Byfield is condemning Thursday's shooting in Grange Hill, Westmoreland in which two high school students were shot, one fatally.

Killed was 16-year-old Carson Barrett, a student of Grange Hill High School.

A female schoolmate was hospitalised.

Byfield says he's deeply saddened by the gun attack, stressing that no student should ever have to fear for their safety while pursuing an education.

Head of the Westmoreland police, Superintendent Othneil Dobson, told The Gleaner that the investigations are pointing to the ongoing conflict between the Kings Valley Gang and the Ants Posse Gang.

Byfield charged that it is utterly unacceptable that such violence has touched the school community.

“Violence should have no place in our society, and we strongly condemn this heinous shooting incident,” he said in a statement today.

“I am calling upon the authorities to swiftly investigate the matter, bring the perpetrators to justice, and take necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of all students in our community,” he added.

He is appealing to anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward and assist the police in their investigation.
