Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett says nearly 9,500 persons are now registered with the Tourism Workers Pension Scheme (TWPS).

Of that number, he said 7,027 are contributing members.

In his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in Parliament this afternoon, Bartlett said the total contributions to the pension scheme is now J$1.63 billion.

According to Bartlett, monthly contributions to the scheme are now averaging more than J$80 million.

He said given this average the scheme is well on its way to recording total contributions of more than J$3 billion.

The tourism minister said that the pension scheme caters for all categories of workers in the tourism sector including airport workers, taxi drivers, craft workers, rafters, among others.

With the launch of the TWPS in January 2022, Jamaica became the only country in the world with a comprehensive pension plan for tourism workers.

“This pioneering scheme continues to serve as a vital support system for our hardworking industry personnel, ensuring they can retire with dignity and security in their later years,” Bartlett said.
