Man killed, policeman injured in alleged shootout in St Catherine

The St Catherine South police fatally shot an unidentified man during an alleged confrontation which resulted in the seizure of an Intratech sub-machine gun near Old Harbour, St Catherine, Wednesday morning.

It is reported that about 2:40 a.m., a police operation was conducted in Bois Content in search of wanted persons.

The police were reportedly greeted by gunfire as they approached an area of the community and a shootout ensued.

When the shooting subsided, the unidentified man was observed suffering from gunshot wounds.

The sub-machine gun with a number of rounds was reportedly seized from him and he later succumbed  to  his injuries.

During the incident a police constable sustained a broken leg and has been admitted to hospital for treatment.

A probe is underway by the Independent Commission of Investigations.
