THE UNITED United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations (UN) Volunteers’ Young Talent Pipeline are progressing efforts to engage talented young people to become future leaders across climate, environment and pollution action.

In a June 25 news release, UNEP noted that the two entities had embarked on a second phase of the pipeline, which is intended to deploy the second cohort of 12 young talented individuals in areas related to its mandate and to seek candidates from Latin America and the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Africa.

“If you are 33 years of age or younger, check out the assignment opportunities. Women and individuals from marginalised groups are especially encouraged to apply,” noted the release from the UNEP, which is the global authority on the environment, with a mission to ‘inspire, inform, and enable nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations’.

Candidates are required to have academic degrees in relevant areas, along with three years of professional experience.

“Dynamic thinkers with relevant experience and a passion for the environment, particularly for solutions to the triple planetary crises of climate change, pollution, nature and biodiversity loss are encouraged to apply,” the release said.

Those who are selected will be based in UNEP’s headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, with assignments expected to begin in November 2024 and last for 12 months, with a possibility of extension.

UN volunteers recruited in the Young Talent Pipeline will have access to learning and professional development opportunities, including a suite of online learning programmes.

Among the assignments in the pipeline are water ecosystems specialist; ocean governance specialist; climate early-warning systems portfolio specialist; digital and emerging technology specialist; sustainable textiles specialist; and associate programme officer (stakeholder engagement).

Also available are sustainable mobility specialist; information technology infrastructure specialist; programme officer – carbon markets and pricing; and science policy specialist, among others.
