Tropical Depression Two formed Friday afternoon east of the Caribbean islands and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane as it heads west toward the Caribbean.

The National Hurricane Centre says the system could become a hurricane when it reaches the Windward Islands late Sunday or Monday.

It says hurricane and tropical storm watches will likely be required for parts of the Windward and southern Leeward Islands later tonight or Saturday.

The Meteorological Service of Jamaica stated on social media site X that while it is "still too early to be certain" Jamaicans should remain alert.
