The Meteorlogical Service of Jamaica says the centre of Hurricane Beryl is expected to pass near or over the southern coast of the island, moving from east to west, between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. today.

Rainfall from the outer bands of the hurricane has already been affecting sections of Jamaica.

The Met Service says strong winds, reaching near tropical storm force, are expected to reach Jamaica at 9 a.m.

At 7 a.m., the eye of Beryl was located 145 kilometres east-southeast of Morant Point, St Thomas.

Beryl remains a category 4 hurricane.

The Met Service forecasts four to six inches of rain for the island during the passage of the hurricane.
