The roof of the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in Kingston, has been damaged as Hurricane Beryl wreaks havoc with its ferocious winds and rain.

Head of the Airports Authority of Jamaica, Audley Deidrick, told The Gleaner that the damage is at the passenger pier where jet bridges are connected.

The airport was closed on Tuesday night ahead of the storm.

The operator of the airport, PAC Kingston Airport Limited, said the decision was made in the interest of safety for staff and passengers and the protection of airport infrastructure.

It said the reopening of the airport would be determined based on the assessment of post-storm conditions and the safety of resuming operations.
