WESTERN BUREAU:

Heavy rains and storm-force winds associated with the passage of Hurricane Beryl left a devastating impact on the 286-year-old The Manning’s School in Westmoreland.

Administrators of the school on Thursday related major damage to its buildings and perimeter fencing.

The roof of just about every building on the compound suffered damage of varying proportions, with some completely blown off.

Moses Chybar, chairman of the board at the school, said the financial cost of the damage is yet to be determined.

He told The Gleaner that the principal, Steve Gordon, and his middle managers will embark on an assessment during the coming days.

“There is one block that the roof went off entirely,” said Chybar. “The auditorium, some sections of the roof have been damaged.”

Chybar said that there was damage right across the entire school property, including its fencing.

“As for the new building, some windows were broken,” he said, referencing the Victor Lowe Science Technology Education Mathematics Centre, which was commissioned in March 2023.
