Opposition Spokesman on Energy, Phillip Paulwell, has accused the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) of focusing on the"easy tasks" in the power restoration effort while it is yet to begin the "heavy lifting".

Paulwell made the assertion in a statement to the media on Monday in which he expressed concern about the company's ongoing efforts to restore electricity across the island.

He noted that in a previous press release he had highlighted the need for urgency in restoring electricity and said "it is now evident that the utility company is trespassing too long on the patience and productivity of the people of Jamaica."

"It is clear that the JPSCo is focusing on the easy tasks and has yet to commence the heavy lifting part of the restoration effort. It is apparent that they lack the necessary personnel and resources to efficiently restore electricity to our communities. This prolonged delay is not only inconvenient but also detrimental to the economic well-being of our nation," he asserted.

Paulwell noted that many supermarkets and wholesalers have suffered significant losses amounting to millions of dollars because of the prolonged power outages.

He said he was also concerned about fisherfolk in coastal areas who cannot fish to earn a living without electricity because they need to chill their catch.

Paulwell called for the JPS to prioritise the restoration of electricity to all affected areas across the island promptly.

He also urged the utility company to ensure transparency and accountability in their operations as they work towards resolving the ongoing challenges.
