Governor General Sir Patrick Allen and Lady Allen hosted the 62nd Independence reception on the lawns of King’s House last Thursday to kick-start the Emancipendence festivities. The National Museum of Jamaica and the National Gallery of Jamaica featured a temporary exhibit that explored the rich history of Port Royal. It encompassed Port Royal’s history across the Taíno, Spanish, English and Jamaican periods. Patrons enjoyed the food and the drinks, which were prepared by Jacqui Tyson’s Thought to Finish and refreshments sponsored by Wisynco & Wray and Nephew, respectively. This year, the nation celebrates its 62nd birthday under the theme: ‘Jamaica 62: One Love to the World.’ Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Culture Minister, Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, as well as other members of government, diplomats, the private sector and friends, enjoyed the night’s event that featured performances by the Iree-Sistars and vocalist and trumpeter, Dwight Richards.
