The fleet of the Montego Bay Metro Company in St James has been expanded by additional buses.

The eight diesel buses, which were previously used in the Corporate Area by the Jamaica Urban Transport Company (JUTC), were handed over today by Transport Minister Daryl Vaz.

Vaz disclosed that a further four buses are to be handed over to the company on Sunday, moving the total fleet from the current six to 18.

“This is going to impact back to school and the routes being served,” Vaz told journalists in Montego Bay earlier today.

He said students, the elderly, members of the disabled community and the general commenting public in Trelawny, St James, Hanover and Westmoreland will see a marked improvement in their transportation needs.

“They are going to upgrade from serving five schools to nine and they are going to continue to serve the four parishes moving from five routes to 11,” the transport minister explained.

Vaz also announced that expansion works will be done at the Montego Bay Metro Company depot over time and that 10 additional buses will be provided from the next set of buses now being procured.

Members of Parliament Marlene Malahoo Forte of St James West Central and Heroy Clarke of St James Central welcomed the investment into the rural bus company.
