The main runway at Sangster International Airport (SIA) in Montego Bay, St James, has been temporarily closed because of "minor damage".

Another runway has been opened for arriving flights,  MBJ Airports Limited, the operators of the facility, advised Sunday evening.

The runway closure occurred at approximately 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, after the damage was observed, according to Transport Minister Daryl Vaz.

He said seven inbound flights were diverted to the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston. There have been at least two flight cancellations.

Departures resumed at about 3:20 p.m. and landings were due to resume at 5 p.m.

"The flights that were diverted to the Norman Manley Airport have resumed their journey to Sangster International Airport with their passengers which remained on board while at [NMIA]," Vaz explained.

He further noted, that "we are expecting the runway [repairs] to be completed tonight and should be back to normality for flights arriving and departing out of Montego Bay tomorrow (August 26)."
