Traffic signals at Flat Bridge out of service due to vandalism - NWA
The National Works Agency (NWA) is reporting that the traffic signals located at Flat Bridge in the Bog Walk Gorge in St Catherine are currently out of service due to damage caused by vandals.
The NWA says this is the latest in a series of several incidents of vandalism over the last six months.
The agency's communication manager Stephen Shaw says vandals have been cutting the cables of the traffic signal.
Shaw says this forced the NWA to place a protective barrier around this critical component of the lighting system.
However, he says the unscrupulous persons have now turned to the system's control box, where the cover was removed and the components destroyed.
Shaw added that the NWA is facing a similar situation of vandalism with the traffic signals located at the intersection of Duke and East Queen streets in downtown Kingston, which are also currently out of service.
He says the traffic signals were rendered inoperable as the cables were burnt and damage done to the Mast Arm on which the lights are placed.
He says the damage to both signals in the Bog Walk Gorge and at the Duke Street/East Queen Street intersection has been estimated at over $1.6 million.
Motorists are being advised to exercise extreme caution in using these corridors.
