Search to resume for two people washed away in river in St Mary

A search is to resume this morning for a woman and a man who were on Thursday washed away by floodwaters in a river in Castleton, St Mary.

Yesterday, the police and residents conducted a search for the two people but it was called off because the river was in spate.

Sections of Jamaica were yesterday lasted by heavy rains.

"My understanding is that a group of persons from Kingston came to Castleton to enjoy themselves… I was told that while they were in the water one of the sisters realised that debris was coming down and the water was getting high so she called out to her sister and told her to get out of the water. But everything happened so fast,” Member of Parliament for St Mary South East Dr Norman Dunn told The Gleaner this morning.

According to police sources, the woman was washed from a rock and that a man, upon realising what happened, jumped in to save her but he too was washed away by the rushing water. 

"The challenge is that the river is still in spate, which makes it difficult to conduct a proper search as the water has not subsided," Dunn stated.

Additional resources have been requested and the marine police have been reportedly dispatch to patrol Annotto Bay, where the river deposits into the sea.
