Schools to resume face-to-face classes Wednesday, says education ministry

The education ministry says schools across Jamaica will reopen for face-to-face classes on Wednesday, where regional and school leadership deem it safe to do so.

The decision follows consultations with the Meteorological Service of Jamaica and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management on the ongoing weather conditions associated with Tropical Storm Rafael, a statement said Tuesday evening. 

In areas where it is not safe to return to in-person classes, the ministry says remote learning will continue through virtual platforms, televised lessons, computer-aided programs, and other educational resources such as learning kits, textbooks, and worksheets.

The ministry has urged schools to communicate directly with parents and guardians to provide updates on the reopening status of their respective institutions. 

Storm Rafael passed south of Jamaica on Tuesday. Landslides, flooded streets, and damaged roadways have been reported in several parishes.

Power provider, the Jamaica Public Service, has reported that restoration of electricity to affected customers has been hampered by the landslides and flooding.
