Jamaica-born Nesta Leeloo celebrates 108th birthday as second oldest living woman in the US
A shining example of resilience, love and family values, is how Jamaican Consul General Oliver Mair described Nesta Leeloo who celebrated her 108th birthday on January 6.
Affectionately called 'Mama', Leeloo was born in Mandeville, Jamaica, and moved to the United States (US) after getting married. She is the second oldest living person in the US.
America's oldest resident is Naomi Whitehead, age 114. She was born in Georgia on September 26, 1910, and now resides in Greenville, Pennsylvania.
At her recent birthday celebration in Tamarac, South Florida, surrounded by her large family and community, Leeloo reflected on the remarkable life she has lived.
“I had a wonderful life, I had wonderful parents, could not ask for more,” she reflected during her birthday celebration. Her life philosophy, grounded in decency and respect for her upbringing, continues to inspire both her family and community.
Her heritage now includes six children, 19 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 23 great-great-grandchildren, and five great-great-great-grandchildren. She was one of 12 children.
“They are my life,” she stated, expressing the deep bond she shares with her descendants.
In honour of her incredible journey, Tamarac Mayor Michelle J Gomez declared January 6 as “Nesta Leeloo Day,” and Mair joined the celebration to deliver birthday greetings as well as a proclamation.
Despite her age, Leeloo remains remarkably active. She is a former seamstress, and still hems pants for her daughters and occasionally plays the piano. And although she recently started using a walker, it has not affected her sense of independence and her zeal for life.
