WESTERN BUREAU:

Scores of persons turned out last Sunday for one of the main highlights of the National Heroes weekend in western Jamaica the second annual 'Heroes in Action Charity 8k Fun Run and 4k Run/Walk' in Falmouth, Trelawny.

A joint initiative of the Jamaica National (JN) Foundation, the Usain Bolt Foundation and the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ), the event which started and ended at the Historic Falmouth Pier, saw a different type of customers other than cruise ship passengers take over the terminal.

JN was running for a cause the Granville Place of Safety for girls, located in Garrick Foyle, Trelawny, and that basis was in tandem with a number of community outreach projects which their sponsors and partners could relate to.

Among them, the Digicel Group, Royalton White Sands, Melia Braco, Hyatt Ziva and Zilara, Sea Gardens Hotel and Scotiabank, came out to support the event, all renowned for empowering and building communities.

In fact, the hosts, PAJ boasted of a few outreach programmes slated to come on stream later this year in the historic town, and a visit to their booth showed plans of the transformation slated to take place in the western parish.

In a visit to their booth, General Manager of Jamaica National Building Society Earl Jarrett, stated, "I am really happy with the partnership with the PAJ to make this possible. I am personally sending greetings back to the board of directors ... to the entire management team at the PAJ for opening up the facility to the community to enable us to have an event of this magnitude."

Participants included Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton and Olympic icon Usain Bolt, who played the role of the official starter for the races.

As is normal, Bolt was a hit with the crowd posing for photos and signing autographs for his fans.

The event was bolstered by reggae artist 'Busy Signal' and the winner of the 2016 Digicel Rising Star, Elton Earlington, whose future seems extremely bright, if he continues to have the look and sound of a Romain Virgo.
