In the doghouse | Doggie treats for Christmas

The most wonderful time of the year is here again, and you know what that means - 'tis the season to be jolly and give gifts. That goes for your dog, too!

Associate veterinarian at Noah's Ark, Melisa Thompson, said that even though dogs enjoy treats all year long, it doesn't hurt to have them join in on the Christmas celebrations by giving them a little something extra for the season. After all, they are family.

She highlights that giving your dog the right gift for Christmas boils down to what you want, and what you think they will love the most. "So with my dog, for instance, she likes long, snake-looking toys, so that is what I'll be getting her for Christmas," revealed Thompson.

Here are few more gift ideas she suggested:

BARK AND BEDDING WORKS

After a hard night's work barking, guarding and protecting the house, have your pup or dog rest in luxury with a brand-new bed. This can be for any dog and should be suitable for their size, so they can experience greater, more comfortable sleep.

BOWL IT UP

Your dog may already own a bowl, but maybe it's time for a new one. And what better way to step it up a notch and personalise it by getting his or her name engraved on it?

COLLARS AND LEASHES

Out with the old and in with the stylishly new, or a more durable kind for walks and outings.

TAG, YOU'RE IT!

Play tag it with your dog by customising/engraving name tags.

BONING IT WITH HAM OR TURKEY

Nothing says 'I love you' more than offering the ultimate palatable treat. They are available at a few pet stores. The size and taste of the bone will keep big dogs happy. They'll definitely appreciate it. You can give bite-sized bacon and ham treats to smaller dogs.

PLAY DRESS UP

Why not play dress up with your dog? The outfit you purchase for your dog should be chosen based on its size. Smaller breeds may be better candidates for dress up.

PET & PAMPER - EXTRA GROOMING

How about a little more petting and pampering for your canine pet? Treat him or her to a 'pawtastic' time with some extra grooming, with bows on top for the girls. Grooming specials are available at Noah's Ark.

TOYS,TOYS & MORE TOYS

Playing with the idea of picking up toys for your dog? Well, act on it by getting him or her a squeaky or chewable toy to their liking. Not sure of their preference? Then try your luck getting two and see which one works better.
