Spring into summer with a few DIYS

Summer is finally here, and I am ecstatic to create handmade masterpieces which will include classic floral palazzo pants, cold shoulder flounce top using bold statement colours.

This sure will add a little flair and adventure to my summer wardrobe, whether done in ruffles, off-shoulders, funky sleeves or trending summer colours. From bright orange to pinks, to florals to solids - these looks will brighten someone's day at a barbecue, beach party, family vacation or even a date night.

Over the last few weeks, I have been in sewing overdrive. I truly enjoy creating my own unique pieces, as I get to select my fabric of choice, create and cut custom-fit pieces to my body type and sense of style. In addition, custom-made pieces are making a comeback, as clothing that are mass produced are sometimes only made to fit certain body types.

Having curves, a small upper body and not the average height makes finding the right fit pants, tops and even skirts a challenge. Sewing my own clothes has allowed me to customise patterns and create fits that are oh so perfect.

Having overcome my fear of cutting with commercial sewing patterns, I wanted patterns that were easy to sew, versatile, trendy and fun. When I found this McCall top pattern 7573, I envisioned a flounce vintage orange and pink top, with a breezy feel that would make a statement. I wanted a statement top that was bright and bold with a fabric that I found for US$3 on clearance - roughly J$400 for three yards of lightweight cotton. I knew this texture was impeccable, as the light silhouette and feel was perfect for the summer heat.

I was in awe after seeing the finished product as there were no adjustments needed, based on the pattern size that I cut. I love the vintage neckline and the orange yoke and how classy it looks with dark denim skinny jeans. Leftover fabric did not go to waste, as I used the remaining material to create a fun, off-shoulder summer top for my daughter.

I received so many positive feedbacks, so I opted to create another, without sleeves, using an amazing Ankara (African) print that I found on etsy.com. This print is bright and bold and can be worn with a dark pencil skirt to the office, or with white denim for a night out. My daughter loved the print and begged me to create a matching dress with the leftover for her summer vacation.

When it comes to a classic bodycon fitted dress, you can't go wrong with a curvy body type. I was determined to learn how to insert sleeves, and opted for a scuba knit fabric. This amazing midnight blue is perfect for a date night or a happy-hour event with a little added spunk to the sleeves and centre neckline. The blue colour will radiate in the dark and add a little spark to the night. Going out to a fancy restaurant? Why not strike a pose and show off your curves!

Palazzo pants made with lightweight rayon or polyester is perfect for the summer. With the steamy, hot temperature during the summer months, a tank top is perfect with a palazzo pants or a simple DIY circle tube top for any outdoor event. I decided to join in on a sew-along with a group of women and created my first palazzo pants. Modifications were a must for the commercial pattern used, based on my waist, height and hip measurements. I was impressed, as it was my first time cutting and creating a piece that I have been yearning to do for years, so I did two! I had a little leftover fabric and opted to create a simple top for my daughter for the mommy-and-me look.

I am ready to step out of my comfort zone and create everyday, ready-to-wear pieces, including pants, dresses and tops for my daughter and I. I have truly enjoyed the last three years of sewing therapy, as it has helped me heal from the pain and loss of my father.

Sewing for me is not just about making beautiful clothing, it is my own form of relaxation. When my children are off in dreamland, I connect with the garment and my soul to create wearable masterpieces.
