Simpson Miller raises funds for less fortunate

A large number of guests turned out to support the Portia Simpson Miller Foundation's eighth annual fundraising cocktail party at the Spanish Court Hotel, St Andrew on December 2.

The foundation, which works to help the less fortunate regardless of political persuasion, gender, or religion, has assisted hundreds of students since its inception in 2010.

The fundraiser is one source of funding for the organisation, and not only assists with education, but also social needs, healthcare and basic amenities for the elderly. Former Prime Minister Simpson Miller is led in her foundation by the belief that those who have been blessed, should lend a helping hand to those in need.

"In our own way, we can all work towards making a difference in the lives of many, by lifting them up," she noted to her guests. "This is an amazing opportunity and honour for me, to continue to contribute to the betterment of my fellow Jamaicans through the work of this foundation."

At the event, the foundation received several scholarships from Caribbean Maritime University College of the Caribbean; Wisynco's William Mahfood; Sameer Younis, and Dr Cherise Francis.

Chris McDonald and company provided the musical background at the event, which was accentuated with success testimonials from scholarship recipients Ashley Thompson and Tremain Ellis, who both recently graduated from the University of the West Indies.
