Restore with Taastama

Taastama, which is Estonian for 'restore', is what Nia West aims to do with her line of the same name, from head to toe.

She started by making a curl-defining creme to help maintain those lush and beautiful twistouts. It was to be a DIY project because purchasing products were becoming costly. She did her research and started to make and customise it to her liking. After seeing how effective the creme was, she was encouraged by her sister to do it on a wider scale. She ensured that her raw materials were certified as being organic.

West had a personal battle with acne and dark spots and when she decided to take Taastama to the next level, she decided that the next step was to make a mask and soap that targeted these issues. The product worked, and she added to her soap collection a lavender bar that has its own calming benefit and a shampoo soap. The shampoo soap was an unconventional one, but having a soap allowed for it to be 100 per cent natural versus the liquid that might need a bit more preservatives. West also wanted to showcase her creativity.

"If you notice, the soaps are textured and colourful; that is intentional. I did not want it to just look regular. The bath bombs are also colourful just because I want everything to be attractive," she told Outlook.

Currently, Taastama now includes a curl-defining creme, hibiscus moisture-repairing deep conditioner, 100 per cent pure mango butter, a facial mask for acne and dark spots for both men and women, unrefined cocoa and shea butter, a wide range of carrier and essential oils, soap and handmade, organic bath bombs.

She is hoping to add an edge control and a body butter that is not too greasy, but moisturising to her collection. However, her ultimate dream is to have the next international beauty and self-care line.
