6 psychological problems caused by parenting behavior

With most psychological issues, the reasons are quite trivial. More often than not, these mental problems develop from childhood emotional impressions. Parents are the gateway to how a child will perceive sociological norms and their interactions with society. Parenting styles can have serious effect on a child's mental well-being. Here are six typical character traits of people whose lives were directed by the behaviour of their parents.

6. Lack of Independence

Helicopter parents are always watching and scrutinising their children's lives. They mean well enough, however, this behaviour trait can cause psychological problems in children. Persons who are unable to make a decision without their parents are usually afraid to take chances. Growing up, they have a perception that the world is a dangerous place without the help of their parents. Instead of dictating your child's actions, offer advice and guidance while providing enough space for them to learn and experience things on their own. Allow your children to make mistakes and draw conclusions by themselves. Freedom increases growth and independence.

5. Depression, feeling guilty

If parents say, 'We refused ourselves everything for you to have a higher education', the feeling of undeserved guilt will overwhelm a child. The same goes for threats concerning bad grades - the child is under constant stress. By belittling their efforts, parents can inadvertently cause their children to think of themselves as fools and failures. To motivate your child, encourage them to continue working towards their goals and even offer assistance if necessary.

4. Inability to rest and relax completely

An overly earnest adult who is never fully relaxed doesn't understand children, and hates immature people. This was developed from parents who are constantly telling their child to be serious. Allow your child to embrace the greatest moment of their life - childhood.

3. Harmful Addictions

If parents tell their child how many problems he or she causes, the child will conclude that everyone will be better off without them. As a result, the child will grow into an adult who subconsciously finds ways to destroy himself through the abuse of substances: drinking alcohol, smoking and drugs. Parents can combat this by expressing love and appreciation for their child.

2. Closeness and suppression of emotions

A lack of emotions and sensitivity in parents cannot be ignored by their child's subconscious. By denying a child the right to express themselves, parents often suppress feelings which can give rise to psychological issues.

1. Extremely Low Self-Esteem, desire to be like someone else

Parents who compare their child to more accomplished children will raise a self-critical teenager, then an adult with an inferiority complex. They will always try to perform better while hating themselves for not being superior in the first place. Never compare your child with others.

Parenting mistakes are quite common and the price to pay is high, especially with the effects they have on children. Providing a loving home which encourages growth and development, will increase your child's chances of success in the future.
