Some of the greatest ideas can bear fruit on a whim, and that was just the case when Kiddist McCoy began bringing more style and comfort to her personal space. This resulted in her quest on a new and exciting journey into Jesse’s Home Decor.

McCoy had always been artistic and loved creating art with her hands, but it was never something she pursued professionally. She told Outlook, during a recent interview, that she had no intention of building a home decor business. The concept was birthed from her time spent at home on bed rest, due to complications from her pregnancy.

“I wasn’t sleeping well and decided to get a pregnancy pillow. I started off by making a set of throw pillows. I posted them to my social media pages and persons started liking and commenting on how lovely they were. Before you knew it, orders began coming in. My partner saw the demand for the cushions and suggested that I make it into a business,” she revealed.

Jesse’s Home Decor, named in honour of her son, currently offers cushion cases, personalised cushions using embroidery and photos, sleeping pillows, prints on canvas and most recently, travel pillows.

“We officially started selling cushions in October of 2018. The reception has been phenomenal and we are grateful for the support. So far, aside from tapping into the local market, we have shipped to the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, The Netherlands and St Maarten via Jamaica Post. We also ship islandwide through zip mail.”

The demand from customers are the driving force behind the products: whatever is consistently requested, becomes the next creation. Persons, McCoy shared, love the canvas prints. Who doesn’t like to view a beautiful photo of themselves or their loved ones in a larger form? But the canvas prints also supply an affordable option for accentuating a person’s home or office space. The company receives the client’s favourite photo, a mock-up follows suit once the order is confirmed, and then McCoy, along with her team, goes ahead and prints the masterpiece, adding effects as an option.

Finding a suitable source for raw material was an initial challenge for the first time entrepreneur, but eventually, they did the necessary research and found an alternative, when the first choice suffered from a fire.

“We try our very best to satisfy the requests of our clients, leaving them wowed at the end of each interaction. All of our products are custom made, so we make their products based on what they ask for. Some clients are specific while others allow us to be creative. Most times, we are free to create a mind-blowing product. We love the reactions when we present the end result and when we see the look of excitement, it brings us joy,” she added.

McCoy mentioned Terisa Taylor, as one of her most interesting and beloved clients to date. The third person to place an order with Jesse’s Home Decor, she has kept returning for more. She even employed the use of some of the cushions ordered as props at her wedding held recently.

“She challenged us to make a pillow and bumper for her niece who was on the way and was delighted with the outcome. She sent us an amazing testimonial that had us beaming with pride for days.”

New business, a new baby and a full time job. McCoy currently juggles all three. But she still finds time every now and then to go to the beach – just this weekend, there was a family trip to Frenchman’s Cove in Portland. Here’s her advice to creatives, desiring the opportunity to make a business out of their passion: “Be open to possibilities, be unique and innovative and just start somewhere, because you never know where it will take you!”
