The Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) will host a two-day virtual hazardous materials training course from February 22 to February 23.

The comprehensive course will be facilitated and certified by the Caribbean Maritime University’s Maritime Training Centre and is designed to provide participants with the knowledge, understanding and proficiency in the safe handling, storage and clean-up of hazardous materials and cargoes.

Among the topics to be explored are hazardous materials (hazmat) regulations; hazardous material identification; hazmat packaging; hazmat communication; emergency response; hazmat security, and occupational health and safety.

The collaborative sessions will introduce participants to concepts related to hazardous materials and build on prior knowledge.

The course will also feature a supplemental discussion on practical application by a safety, health and environment expert from Kingston Wharves Limited.

The hazardous materials seminar is the SAJ’s first training course to be offered this year, following the successful staging of its supervisory management and customer service and experience workshops in 2021, which attracted almost 100 participants from approximately 20 companies across several Caribbean territories.
